Celebrate Columbus Day Weekend in the White Mountains of New Hampshire
There’s something truly special about autumn in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. As summer fades and the season changes, the mountains come alive with vibrant shades of gold, orange, and red. Columbus Day Weekend is the perfect time to visit the White Mountains and experience the spectacular beauty of fall.
Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventure, scenic drives, seasonal attractions, or a relaxing weekend surrounded by nature, there’s plenty to see and do throughout the Mount Washington Valley.
Take a Scenic Drive Through the Notches
One of the best ways to experience New Hampshire’s fall foliage is from the comfort of your car. Take a leisurely drive through the area’s scenic mountain passes, where colorful trees, mountain peaks, rivers, and waterfalls create breathtaking views around every turn.
Explore Crawford Notch, Pinkham Notch, Bear Notch Road, or take a drive along the famous Kancamagus Highway. Be sure to allow plenty of time to stop along the way, take photographs, explore scenic overlooks, and simply enjoy the beauty of the season.
Get One More Hike In
For outdoor enthusiasts, fall is an incredible time to hit the trails. Cooler temperatures and colorful foliage make hiking especially enjoyable this time of year.
Whether you choose a favorite trail or discover a new one, there’s nothing quite like being surrounded by the brilliant colors of autumn while enjoying the fresh mountain air.
Not a hiker? There are still plenty of ways to enjoy the mountains!
Enjoy a Scenic Train Ride or Mount Washington Adventure
Let someone else do the driving and take in the scenery from a different perspective.
A trip aboard the Mount Washington Cog Railway is a memorable way to experience the changing landscape as you travel toward the summit of Mount Washington. Another great option is the Conway Scenic Railroad, where you can sit back and enjoy a scenic journey through the mountains and historic Crawford Notch.
These experiences offer a wonderful way to enjoy the fall scenery without having to lace up your hiking boots.
Explore Fall Events and Seasonal Attractions
Columbus Day Weekend is also a great opportunity to explore what’s happening throughout the White Mountains. From seasonal celebrations and special events to local shops, restaurants, and attractions, there are plenty of ways to make the most of your autumn getaway.
For some area attractions, Columbus Day Weekend marks the final weekend of the season, so be sure to check their schedules and visit while they’re still open.
Take a Pumpkin People Tour
One of the most unique fall traditions in the Mount Washington Valley is the annual Return of the Pumpkin People in the Valley display.
Throughout the area, businesses and organizations create imaginative scenes featuring—you guessed it—pumpkins! Pick up a Pumpkin People map and create your own self-guided tour through the Valley. It’s a fun activity for the whole family and a great way to discover different communities, businesses, and attractions along the way.
And don’t forget to cast your vote for your favorite display! People’s Choice voting is open through October 31st, giving you plenty of time to see the displays and choose your favorite.
