Thousands of us have fond memories of visiting Story Land with our families as children. Spending the whole day at the park, exploring the pathways, having a picnic lunch on the great lawn by the antique cars, getting a photo with Humpty Dumpty, and getting scared by Miss Muffett’s spider, are all part of our childhood experience. Seeing fairy tales and nursery rhymes come to life was a memorable part of growing up.
Over the years, we watched as the park grew and changed, adding new rides, new adventures, and re-purposing or removing old and outdated items. Some things, like the Fire Truck, had to be housed as museum pieces due to old age and safety regulations. Mechanical parts wear out over time, but the history, and the fond memories are still there.
In the 1960’s there were trained seals that performed acts. The swim tank and performance stage was located at the base of where the Polar Coaster is now. I remember standing for what felt like hours watching them swim, and watching the trainers feed them from buckets filled with fish. I am sure my parents were ready to move along before I was. Heidi’s Grandfather’s house was a family favorite, as were the 3 little Pigs. I always wondered how many sets of little pigs they used over the summer, as they grow up so fast. Remember when there were teams of live horses pulled Cinderella’s Coach up the hill to her castle? The teams were housed by the Great Carousel, and there were 3 or 4 teams there all the time. How about when the Bamboo Chutes were added? What a fun and exciting ride that tickles your belly! Do you remember the Jungle Safari ride? You were transported to the deepest part of Africa, where you saw lions, elephants, and a giraffe!!
There are so many wonderful memories spanning the decades, that the park is hoping the attendees will dress in retro clothing and re-create beloved family photos. Of course, some of the rides no longer exist, but the newer rides are just as exciting and ready for new memories to be made. This Nostalgia Night will be a lovely addition to fond memories, and with a live band, food, and adult beverages being offered, this will be a night to remember!
